Everyone was happy with this year’s Monaco Yacht Show! Held in September at Port Hercule in the prestigious and fairytale port of Monaco with its magnificent views of the Alps and the Mediterranean sea, the show lived up to its name as the world’s premier luxury yacht show. The Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) is the only nautical trade show in the world with a focus on boats of 20m and over and big was the name of the game. Gigantic and sumptuous yachts with their tall masts aimed high towards the French Alps impressing visitors by their immense size. The other advantage of this show is that you get to see these big babies floating elegantly in their natural habitat, the crystal clear water of the Med – a real advantage to brokers who want to take clients out for a test sail.
Although some rain came down between sunny spells during the show, it did not deter the exclusive clientele who hit the docks. Even the billowing clouds racing across the sky tipping the peaks of the mountains and the prince’s palace seemed to add to the amazing ambiance.
The folks at The Sacks Group Yachting Professionals were very happy with this year’s show if great results are the yardstick by which to measure success. Curtis Stokes, one of their Yacht Sales representatives, is a man on a mission with three potential customers on the books for new yacht construction, five new potential sales listings and a long list of contacts as a result of this year’s Show, which according to Curtis “was even better than last year.” Although The Sacks Group didn’t have a slip (the Show is so successful there is a waiting list), Curtis is confident they will next year so they can display their big boats to the big customers. And Monaco is where you find them confirmed Curtis. “We spoke with serious, qualified, potential customers in a location that merits their presence. Last year The Sacks Group increased their focus on business in the Mediterranean, since many of our charters and yachts are already there. As a result, we are definitely committed to the Monaco Yacht Show for the future.” The improvements to this year’s Show location were appreciated and Curtis agreed - “the extension to the T-dock, where we had our stand, made all the difference to the flow of visitors.”
The Sacks Group offers a diverse and complete range of services including sales and charters; their unique service of “Try Before You Buy” allows potential buyers to charter first with a view to purchasing a vessel. “We negotiate the deduction of the charter cost from the purchase price,” explained Curtis. The Sacks Group offices are in Fort Lauderdale but the team travels constantly to wherever the clients’ needs take them. They also work with corresponding brokers in Europe to ensure a top quality service. Present at this year’s show from The Sacks Group were Curtis Stokes, Gill Stokes, Janet Sherron and Bruce Schattenburg, Managing Director. Because of its beautiful and ideal location the Mediterranean is home to many charter companies with offices here. Rupert Nelson, Sales Director at Nigel Burgess spoke to me in his Monaco office. “We have one of the biggest yachts on show at Monaco. ‘Sherakhan’, our new 70 metre yacht is docked at the Jetty Nord and we have many potential buyers coming to see her.” When asked to reveal the purchase price Rupert politely declined adding that he’d rather be discrete on that point. No doubt at that high level discretion is important. “Yes it is which is why it is ideal that our offices are located in the port of Monaco so clients can relax in our spacious conference rooms and discuss their needs with us in private, away from the curious eyes on the port. And then after a short walk they can take a look at our yachts in the water.” Nigel Burgess clenched the deal at Monaco on several yachts that have been on the market for a while. A nice way to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary!
Peter Insull’s, a small chartering company based in Antibes, a few nautical miles down the coast from Monaco have exhibited at the MYS for the past fifteen years. Charter broker Fiona Maureso says “The show is much bigger this year. It is the ideal show to meet our clientele as we deal with customised projects. We have Leander, a 75 metre motor yacht on show on the T jetty. She was built in 1993, has a gym, swimming pool and many luxurious features and is quite unique in that she has 10 cabins, which accommodate 12 guests.” The charter price for Leander is $490,000 per week.
Richard Lambert, Managing Director of Ocean Style just wrapped up the Cannes Yacht Show before Monaco and exhibited at the MYS for the first time this year. “We mainly deal in yacht sales, which is the main focus of Monaco but we are looking to develop our chartering business in 2006.” Ocean Style had Salacia on show; she is a 110 feet, high performance yacht doing up to 25 knots, built by Evolution in Australia. She is for sale for €10.5 million ($12.7).
The show was brimming with companies involved in every aspect of the mega luxury yacht industry. Here are some of the highlights.
Buying a boat?
Olivier Milliex, Director of a bank in Monaco, Société Monegasque des Etudes Financières (SMEF) spoke to me at the show about what good deals he can offer you to finance your dream yacht. He says financing the purchase in Monaco will save you paying the usual taxes. Instead of the usual 15-20% Value Added Tax (VAT) you pay only 6% (for yachts larger than 24 meters for private use). Thanks to SMEF’s experience in structured financial products and to the particularly favourable terms of European regulations it is possible to benefit from reduced VAT in case of leasing purchases. Contact details at www.smef.mc or email: firstname.lastname@example.org or Tel: +377 97 97 31 41.
The British Virgin Islands looked like the perfect playground for your yacht when I checked out their stand. The tranquil archipelago of the BVI consists of over 60 islands, cays and inlets surrounded by crystal clear waters and coral reef. Christine Taylor told me that they are currently in negotiation to receive “category one” status, which will allow yachts of all sizes to be welcomed to this paradise. A new $65 million resort development (including a 70-slip marina) started in August this year on Scrub Island, a pristine 230-acre paradise with white sand beaches. Private estates and residences range in price from $785,000 to $1.785 million, are due for completion in Fall 2007.
Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting
The very friendly boys on the Antigua Barbuda stand offered more than just potent and delicious rum punch to thirsty visitors! They showed me the beautiful location awaiting you in the Caribbean. They reminded me that the Antigua Charter Yacht meeting takes place 7-12 December 2005. Yacht Vacations & Charters magazine has published the directory for the show. Over 70 companies will be attending - last year 119 yachts were on display. It is held in the old historical Nelson Dockyard Marina (a former British Navy base). For details check www.antiguaclassics.com
The charter company, Ocean Independence (formerly Sea Independence - the name change is as of June) with offices here in Monaco said “this show is the best show yet”. The company had several yachts on display; the 71-meter super yacht “Haida G” was in the water after several years of restoration at berth T22. She offers beautiful accommodation for up to twelve guests and sixteen crew and is available for selected charters throughout the year. This is the company that charters the famous classic yacht “Christina O” so you know you are getting quality and top service with them.
Need a helicopter?
Sometimes your charter yacht isn’t enough to get around - a helicopter can provide a fast way to visit the Riviera and catch all the sights this region has to offer while keeping your yacht moored and your chef cooking ready to serve dinner upon your return. HeliRiviera, located in Cannes La Bocca here on the Riviera can organise a daily or weekly (or longer) hire of a helicopter so you can enjoy an aerial as well a coastal view of the Mediterranean. www.heliriviera.com
Sail away to golf on the Cote d’Azur?
Charter and Charter with offices in Monaco offer some of the world’s best yachts and now present an entirely new and splendid concept of “Yacht Plus Golfing Circuit.” In conjunction with Monte Carlo Golf Club, a Charter and Charter yacht will play host to keen fans of the sport aboard one of their luxury yachts for one week and each day take you to the best golf clubs and exclusive reserved courses along the Riviera coast, taking in gorgeous spots between Monaco and St Tropez. Visits to other sights inland, among the most beautiful Provencal countryside are also part of the programme.
Sail to the Monaco Grand Prix in 2006. What better way to see the fast car action than from the exclusive position of the Port Hercule in Monaco in May - no messing with the crowds that throng to the tiny Principality for this most famous of fast car races. From the comfort of your yacht you can relax and enjoy the experience from the water in privacy. Charter and Charter have two fabulous yachts on show at the MYS the 72-feet San Lorenzo and the classic 98.4 feet ‘CRN Riva’, which accommodate respectively 12 and 25 guests onboard during the Grand Prix. Contact the company at their stand or email email@example.com for prices.
After the Grand Prix why not stay on throughout the summer in the Med so you can attend the Monaco Yacht Show, which takes place same place 20-23 September 2006. See you there!
